The shovel drill consists of a steel shank and an interchangeable head blade. The shank of the toolholder has two types of structures: side-fixed shank and Morse shank. Side shank shanks are commonly used on CNC lathes, machining centers and CNC machines. Morse shanks are used in conventional machines such as vertical drills, swing arm drills and general purpose machines. The conversion from external to internal cooling can be realized by simply installing a set of cooling rings. Cooling water enters the shank through the cooling ring, passes through the internal cooling holes and cools the insert directly. The high pressure of the cooling water helps to remove the chips.
There are two types of chip removal forms for toolholders: straight grooves and spiral grooves. When the workpiece is rotating and the tool is stationary, the straight groove is more conducive to chip removal, such as lathe machining. When the tool is rotating at high speed when the workpiece is stationary, the more choice of spiral chip removal groove, such as CNC machine tools, rocker arm drilling and so on. According to the length-to-diameter ratio (i.e., the ratio of length to diameter) of the tool shank, it can be categorized into 3D,5D,7D,9D or even higher.
The inserts of spade drills are categorized into two types: carbide inserts and high-speed steel inserts. The range of carbide inserts is from 9mm to 32mm, while the range of HSS inserts is from 9mm to 68mm, and some of the non-standardized inserts can be even bigger. HSS inserts are generally M42 cobalt-containing HSS with 8% cobalt, which has better wear resistance and toughness.
Shovel drill blades are positioned by grooves and fixed positively and negatively by two screw holes, which can ensure the symmetry of the blades between 0.01-0.02mm. Depending on the size of the insert, there are generally 2-6 chipbreaker grooves. Depending on the material to be cut, the top of the insert is either an X-tip or an S-tip.
